“Repository decision requires broad societal debate”
Nagra submitted the general licence application for a deep geological repository today. The next step is the review by the authorities, but a broad societal debate is also needed, Nagra CEO Matthias Braun pointed out. The repository should be legitimised not only through a technical review, but also as a result of a direct democratic process.

Siting region actively involved in shaping project of the century
Following its siting proposal in 2022, Nagra prioritised collaboration with the region in 2023. This was also a topic at Nagra’s annual general meeting in Bern today. The focus this year is on submitting the general licence applications in autumn 2024.

Nagra founds subsidiaries for the construction and operation of the deep geological repository project
Nagra will found two new subsidiaries that will be responsible for the construction and operation of the deep geological repository (Nagra gTL AG) and of the encapsulation plants (Nagra BEVA AG). The members of the Nagra Cooperative unanimously approved this decision at an extraordinary general meeting. By doing so, Nagra will follow the proven Alptransit organisational model.
