Siting regions for the repository for L/ILW

Six geological siting regions are proposed in Switzerland for a repository for low- and intermediate-level waste. Five of the regions lie in the northern midlands and one in central Switzerland.
The six siting regions – Südranden, Zürich Nordost, North of Lägern, Jura Ost, Jura-Südfuss and Wellenberg – all have clay-rich sediments as a potential host rock. These include the Opalinus Clay, the Brauner Dogger, the Effingen Beds and the marl formations of the Helveticum.

 

In order to design and construct the caverns safely, the host rock requires an extent of at least three square kilometres, with a usable width of at least one kilometre.

 

Following a review based on aspects of safety and engineering feasibility, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) and other review bodies approved the proposed siting regions. On 30th November 2011, the Federal Council decided to incorporate the siting regions definitively into the Sectoral Plan.
