Where could a repository be constructed?

The two repositories have to be constructed at a location where protection of humans and the environment can be assured over long timescales. Safety takes priority over all other considerations.

Based on the requirements set out by the Federal Government, Nagra has proposed six potential siting regions. A repository for low- and intermediate-level waste could be sited in the regions Südranden (Canton Schaffhausen), Zürich Nordost (Cantons Zürich/Thurgau), North of Lägern (Cantons Zürich/Aargau), Jura Ost (Canton Aargau), Jura-Südfuss (Cantons Aargau/Solothurn) or Wellenberg (Cantons Nidwalden/Obwalden) (see map). A repository for high-level waste or for co-disposal of both types of waste could be located in Zürich Nordost, North of Lägern or Jura Ost. The federal safety authorities have reviewed and approved Nagra’s siting proposals and they have also been confirmed by the Federal Council.
