Nagra’s work is subject to intense scrutiny. The site investigations and plans for the later construction and operation of deep geological repositories are reviewed and evaluated by the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI). Up to the end of 2008, HSK was responsible for these tasks. According to a new law of 22nd June 2007, HSK was detached from the Federal Office of Energy (FOE) as of the beginning of 2009 and is now an independent organ of the Federal Government under public law with the name Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI).
The Federal Council and the licensing authorities can also call upon the following expert bodies and commissions:
Federal Interagency Working Group on Nuclear Waste Management (AGNEB)
Commission for Nuclear Waste Management (KNE)
Commission for Nuclear Safety (KNS).
Key reports and concepts are also evaluated on behalf of the authorities by foreign experts appointed by international organisations.
