Nagra’s activities are financed by the six members of the Cooperative in accordance with the polluter pays principle. The current and future costs of managing the waste from the nuclear power plants are contained in the current price of electricity. For each kilowatt hour of nuclear electricity, the consumer pays around 1 rappen (cent) towards waste management (decommissioning and dismantling of the nuclear power plants, waste transport, interim storage and deep geological disposal, including the necessary research and investigations). The Federal Government is responsible for collecting the waste from medicine, industry and research. The producers in these cases pay a fee for this service.
