Waste management - how?

Spain

Spain has eight reactors, which contribute around 20 percent to total electricity production.

The waste is currently stored at the reactor sites. A centralised interim storage facility is being planned and the site for this facility will be selected in the near future.

Low- and intermediate-level waste has been disposed of in the El Cabril surface repository since 1992. A facility for very low-level waste has been in operation at the same site since 2008.

Generic (i.e. non-site-specific) safety reports have been prepared for geological repositories for high-level waste in granite and clay. The priority, however, is to find a site for the interim storage facility.
