Media release of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy

Radioactive waste: Provisional siting regions covering 202 communities specified

As part of the ongoing site selection process for deep geological repositories for radioactive waste, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy has now specified the provisional siting regions. These include local communities that are, or could be, particularly affected either due to their geology, by the surface facilities of the planned repositories, through their proximity to directly affected areas or through additional spatial planning or socio-economic factors. The provisional siting regions were defined together with the siting Cantons, the start-up teams of the communities within the provisional planning perimeters and representatives from neighbouring German districts.
