ZWILAG, the centralised interim storage facility for radioactive wastes from the Swiss nuclear power plants, is located in Würenlingen in Canton Aargau. The interim storage facility of the Federal Government for radioactive waste from medicine, industry and research is located close by. A large proportion of the waste that already exists today is stored safely in these two facilities – it is solidified, packaged, shielded and monitored constantly. Smaller interim storage facilities are also located at the nuclear power plant sites.
Nagra maintains a centralised inventory of waste types and volumes. Each individual waste container is recorded, together with information on the waste composition and the exact storage location.
