Transport

Tried-and-tested infrastructure and technology are already available for transporting radioactive waste. The waste and the spent fuel elements are transported by rail and road. The ZWILAG interim storage facility has a special vehicle for transporting containers with high-level waste.

A permit is required for each transport action. The provisions that apply are in accordance with international transport regulations and are anchored in the legislation of the different countries. Safe containment of the radioactive materials must be assured at all times and there must be no risk to man and the environment.

The transport containers for vitrified high-level waste from reprocessing and for spent fuel elements are subjected to rigorous testing. They have to be able to withstand a free fall from a height of nine metres onto a hard surface and a half-hour fire test with an average flame temperature of at least 800°C without any damage.
