Nagra’s work is monitored intensively.
Site investigations and, at a later stage, the construction and operation of the deep geological repositories are monitored and controlled by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI). HSK was responsible for these tasks up to the end of 2008.
According to a law of 22nd June 2007 (Act on the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate), HSK was separated off from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) as of the beginning of 2009 and is now an independent body of the Federal Government constituted under public law with the name Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI).
The Federal Council and the licensing authorities can also call on the following expert bodies and commissions for support:
Swiss Federal Workgroup for Nuclear Waste Disposal (AGNEB)
Expert Group on Nuclear Waste Disposal (EGT)
Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC)
Key reports and concepts are also reviewed on behalf of the authorities by foreign experts appointed by international organisations.
