Disposal - where?

Siting areas for the surface facility

Surface infrastructure is required for the construction and operation of a deep geological repository. The central component of this infrastructure is the surface facility, where the waste is delivered and prepared for emplacement in the repository.

The second stage of the repository site selection process has been underway since December 2011. One of the objectives of this stage is to prepare more detailed repository projects for the six potential siting regions. The location for the surface facility also has to be decided, including how it will be accessed and integrated into the landscape. The local population and the authorities will be involved in making these decisions. Starting from February 2012, as part of regional participation, they will discuss potential siting areas for the surface facility together with Nagra.

As the basis for these discussions, Nagra has proposed potential siting areas for the surface facility in each region. The public and the authorities are also free to make alternative proposals.
