Media Release of the Swiss Federal Department of the Environment, Traffic, Energy and Communications

The first stage of the site selection process for deep geological repositories for radioactive waste is complete. On 30th November, the Federal Council approved the results report for Stage 1 of the process and decided to incorporate all six siting regions proposed by the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) into the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories. The six siting regions are Südranden, Zürich Nordost, North of Lägern, Jura Ost, Jura-Südfuss and Wellenberg. The Federal Council also requested the Department of the Environment, Traffic, Energy and Communications (DETEC) to initiate Stage 2 of the site selection process. During this stage, which will extend over around four years, the proposed siting regions will be investigated in more detail.
