Announcement of potential siting regions for deep geological repositories

Today, the Federal Office of Energy announced the proposals made by Nagra for potential geological siting regions for deep repositories for radioactive waste.

According to the conceptual part of the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories, Nagra is responsible for identifying potential siting regions for repositories based on the scientific and technical criteria set out in the Plan. Nagra has proposed three siting regions for the high-level waste repository; in all of these the preferred host rock formation – the Opalinus Clay – occurs with a suitable extent and depth. For low- and intermediate-level waste, six regions with the host rocks Opalinus Clay, Effingen Beds, Brauner Dogger and the marl formations of the Helveticum have been proposed.
