Is it possible to find a safe solution?

Experts worldwide agree that deep geological disposal is the safest solution available today for isolating radioactive waste from the human environment. In Switzerland, Nagra has been carrying out research in the field of nuclear waste management for almost 40 years. Its investigations have shown that safe repositories can be constructed in Switzerland. The safety authorities and the Federal Government have reviewed and approved the demonstrations of feasibility and safety submitted by Nagra.

Besides assuring the highest possible level of safety, geological disposal also keeps options open for future generations. They can choose to monitor the facility for as long as they wish or can close it definitively. They can also retrieve the waste - for example in the case where they wish to use the uranium contained in the spent fuel. What is decisive is that the repository must remain safe, irrespective of what happens at the earth's surface.
