Waste management - how?

In Switzerland, we know how to manage radioactive waste and how we can construct safe geological repositories. All the key technical questions have been answered. In acknowledgement of this, the Federal Council approved the “Entsorgungsnachweis” project demonstrating the feasibility of constructing a safe repository for high-level waste in 2006.

How the site selection process will be conducted and what criteria a potential site will have to fulfil are defined in the sectoral plan for deep geological repositories. The stepwise procedure specified in the sectoral plan also allows new information and scientific developments to be taken into account at all stages of the process.
